Fortress
I think that the fortress of Alba Iulia is one oft the most beautiful Romanian fortresses. It is not very old, but definitely impressive. The fortress was built during the Middle Ages and it occupies about one fifth of the whole town. It spreads on 12 km. 20000 slaves were used to build it. The fortress sometimes hosts festivals and ceremonies, especially on the 1st of December, which is the National Day of Romania. This day is celebrated in Alba Iulia, because this is where the Union took place. When I visited the fortress, we needed about 1 or 2 hours to walk through the whole fortress. You get really nice views on the region from there. [more] |
