Shangri La River Front Hotel Restaurant, Bangkok

The Shangri-La lobby bar cover charge

I also had another observation about the Hotel’s latest “offer”. Whilst the lobby bar was very beautiful, it was an indoor bar and had no access to any patio or terrace. Although the windows did front the river, we felt that we would be somewhat divorced from the excitement of the event if we were to stay there. Indeed it would be more akin to watching it on TV! The cover charge did not give access to the lower floor patio, as that was exclusively reserved for the people who had coughed up for the buffet. In the end we stayed for a standard meal in the lobby bar and ate an early dinner at normal prices. The Shangri-La Riverside Gala Buffet

I made my way to the restaurant enquiries desk in the Shangri-La, which is located in the second building. There I was told that for the patio side “ gala “ buffet, the price was 13800 baht per head. This would be some US$1000 just for dinner for the two of us, which is about ten times the normal amount for this hotel. I felt that this was certainly overpriced. Indeed the Shangri-La has a standard buffet which I have had the opportunity to go to in the past, and this was priced at around 1500 baht, which whilst satisfying was still quite expensive by Bangkok standards. Most 5 star hotels have offerings in the 700 to 900 baht range. In the end you can only eat so much, and so a very expensive buffet is quite a waste even if there is a massive array of food on offer. Dining at The Shangri La River Front Hotel, Bangkok

I had a recent opportunity to dine at the Shangri La Riverside hotel in Bangkok and my meal there was very nice, though it was up against very high expectations. The hotel’s main restaurant provides indoor air-conditioned seating plus an altogether larger seating area outside, which is spread along the patio giving great views of the river front. I chose to sit outside for my evening meal as the temperature was quite cool, (though I was mindful to avoid dusk which is when mosquitoes can sometimes appear). The buffet looked quite nice but at over 1200 baht, and with it largely consisting of open dishes, I decided to opt for the ala carte menu. I chose fish from the somewhat limited choices on offer, and this was very well presented and of good quality. I had some nice cocktails too but I would say that it was the scenery that was the most pleasant part of my evening. [more ]
