Bazil's Backpackers - Westport YHA
The large wooden building that sits like a... well, like a large wooden building on Russell Street in Westport looks dark and cold. The funny thing is, it IS dark and cold. It matches the weather, really. But the owner is friendly and talkative, and will even drive out to the small airport to pick you up if you require it.
Bazil's Backpackers is close to the centre of town, and is within 5 minutes walk of restaurants, pubs, and supermarkets. It has a variety of multishare bunkrooms and apartments, as well as tent sites and campervan sites. There is a huge communal kitchen for dormsters and campers, as well as a TV lounge, 24 hour key access, and bike hire. Linen is provided.
I found the whole place cold and damp, and in need of a better lighting system.
Hostel rooms have 4 or 8 beds, and generally cost $25. Double and twin ensuite private rooms have their own kitchens, and cost $80 a night.
Westport is on the rugged West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, and is surrounded by National Parks. The township of 5,000 offers caving, white-water rafting, surfing, jet boating, mountain biking, fishing, and horse riding. That's enough to keep anyone occupied. [more ]
