Pasar Klewer Solo (Surakarta) - Souvenirs Traditional Market
In Solo, Jawa Tengah (Central Java) of Indonesia, there is a famous traditional market full with souvenirs of any sorts from Batik (national clothing or woven of the Indonesians), shirts, sarongs, slippers, wood carving, masks, paintings and plenty more; called Pasar Klewer. Many domestic and international tourists would shop at Pasar Klewer for souvenirs; mostly they are looking for Batik; Pasar Klewer is most well known for its Batik, some even would call Pasar Klewer as Batik haven in Java. I’ve only been to Pasar Klewer twice back in 2002 and 2004 while visiting family in Solo; even though I have been told that prices for Batik are cheaper in Pasar Klewer, I still think that Malioboro (souvenir and shopping centre in D.I Yogyakarta) is more fun to explore for more choices of Batik and souvenirs (but yes, Malioboro prices for Batik and souvenirs are way ridiculous sometimes); and when I was exploring Pasar Klewer, many things I saw were similar as what I saw in Malioboro; and it doesn’t matter that you can bargain at Pasar Klewer but as long as you have “white” skins or obvious that you are not Indonesian, the vendors would certainly raise the price twice or more than what they would offer to Indonesian buyers. In Pasar Klewer, souvenirs could also mean “foods and snacks”, some vendors would offer traditional crackers, chips, shredded meat known as Abon (I love the spicy shredded beef, Abon Sapi Pedas; you definitely need to try some of their Abon, they are sweet and has fried garlic mixed in), cookies, and traditional cake, etc. If you are in Solo or nearby Solo, take the time to go to Pasar Klewer; don’t forget to bargain as low as you can, and beware of pickpockets! * NOTE: I have to state that Solo is a city in Jawa Tengah (Central Java) not in D.I Yogyakarta, apparently there’s been a mistake in Cosmotourist’ list of cities of Jawa Tengah and D.I Yogyakarta; just so everyone know, so there won’t be misunderstanding.
