Dohány Street Synagogue
This Synagogue is enormous. In fact it is the largest one in Europe. At point in Budapest there was a tremendously large Jewish population also another reason for the construction of such a large synagogue. Unfortunately the aftermath of World War 2 significantly lowered the Jewish population. The Synagogue is located right at the end of the shopping street Vaci Utca. Before getting here be warned that you are going to go through a security check. Make sure you don't have anything on you like scissors or a knife. Once getting through the checks you are also going to have a wear a hat given to you by the safety check. This must be worn at times. I can't explain how this is a security measure, but apparently its important. There is a grave site behind the Synagogue where it is possible to view many of the people killed during World War 2. I always find it amazing the sheer numbers of graves that are kept at site like this. It is a way to see truly affective the Nazis really were. [more] |

Church: Synagogue on Dohány Street
The Synagogue on Dohány Street is the name of an old Synagogue. Call it by any other name and nobody will know what you are talking about but call it like this and everyone will tell you where you can find this magnificent building. It was first opened for the Jewish people, in 1859 and is now considered the second largest synagogue in Europe. On the outside one can notice the tall towers, over 40 meters high. Though the architecture is oriental there are many influences that can be noticed. Inside one can see the clear separation of seats. The men are seated on the ground floor and the women are seated at the gallery. There are over 6000 seats but, 3000 are usually put to use, the men have more seats than the women and I found this annoying. I however loved the beautiful chandeliers and the Mass was very nice also. [more] |
