Not just a pretty view
Most people come to Parque das Ruinas just to take in the views from the top of the ruined mansion house, but it's worth taking the stairs in the opposite direction too, as interesting art displays are frequently held in the basement. When I last visited, I found a stunning collection of photographs of the Santa Teresa area, well worth a look to spot local landmarks. Like the rest of the park, entrance to the basement gallery is free, so it's a bit of a mystery to me why so few people venture down here. Possibly because it's not very well signposted, but do feel free to head on down - it's open to the public every day except Monday, when the whole park's closed. Refreshingly, there's also a water fountain (filtered water) by the exit, so you can cool down or fill up your own bottle. [more] |

Great views at Parque das Ruinas
If you´re spending time in Santa Teresa, be sure to fit in a visit to Parque das Ruinas, and the adjoining museum. The park is home to a gorgeous colonial mansion, which belonged to a wealthy heiress who would hold fabulous parties here during Rio´s Belle Epoque. The building has now been partially restored and rebuilt in a modernist style, with much steel and glass. Entrance is free and you can wander around the house and grounds, enjoying stunning views of the city - taking in Sugar Loaf and Guanabara bay beyond the favela rooftops.
