13 million books!
Central Rio on a rainy day isn't the prettiest place to be, but when there's no chance of going to the beach Centro is the best place to head for - as this is the place to find the best museums and cultural centres. I decided that now was a good time to visit the Biblioteca Nacional (national library), which I'd admired many times from the outside but never ventured into. You can't miss this place - the neoclassical facade is supported by immense Corinthian columns. Inside it's similarly impressive - the building was finished in 1908 and apparently houses more than 13 million books. It's free to visit here - you can take a tour in English for around R$8, but I was happy just to wander around the cavernous building marvelling at the high ceilings and sheer volume of books.
