The city walls
Right next to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary you can find a small park. At the edges of this particular park you can find the remains of the Old City’s wall that was used for defense and as fortification. The holes in the walls were used to push the guns out. This is all part of what used to be the Old Town and today serves as the very center of Rijeka. These walls are just a small part of what used to be here before and it is believed that the walls date to the Late Antique period. Unfortunately as Rijeka started to grow as a port in 18th century it was simply impossible to keep the city contained within the old walls so parts were demolished. [more] |
