Call (The Jewish quarter)
Just below the Cathedral you will find a maze of small, pretty, cobbled streets this is the Jewish quarter of Girona or as it is called the Call. It is considered to be one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Europe and since the Jewish community was so strong here for well over 600 years it is only to be expected. It was carefully restored from what I could gather from my tourist bureau leaflet. Jewish community lived here quite happily until 15th century when Catholic king Fernando decided to abolish the Jews from Spain. Where the museum stands today there was the Girona’s School of Kabalism which was responsible for spreading the teachings of Judaism in the Western Europe. [more] |
