Malate Church
If you want to commune with some of Manila's homegrown, then I suggest you stay in Malate and attend a Catholic mass in Malate church. Built in the 16th century, this church is one of the oldest churches in the Manila area and has been well-maintained by the locals. It also served as a refuge to the British soldiers in 1772. Today, this church is dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, and the revered statue standing at the altar is originally from Spain. Malate church also is located strategically near Roxas Boulevard and is just a few steps away from Manila Bay. Though the church is also walking distance from the lively Manila nightlife hub that is Malate, the weekend masses retain their solemnity. Believe it or not, during the December dawn masses, the place even attracts churchgoers, like yours truly, who are also members of the bar-restaurant and clubbing crowd. [more] |
