Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, Cebu City

4.0 stars

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Built by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Fr. Andres Urdaneta on the very site where the image of Santo Nino was first found in 1565, this historical destination captures the rich culture and history of the Philippines’ first established city. It is a beautifully constructed church with ornate wood and stone carvings, reminiscent of Spanish architecture. A few steps away from the church, one can find the chapel that houses Magellan’s famous cross, which marks the Philippines’ colonization under Spain for three centuries. Other interesting finds one may enjoy are the Cebu guitars sold outside the church and colorful handcrafted toys and furniture. [more ]

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, or as we fondly refer to it sometimes, the Church of Santo Nino (Child Jesus), is one of the pit stops that we had when we were in Cebu. Aside from the fact that we just arrived in Cebu, we were in town on a Wednesday, which meant that we had to visit a church and the Basilica, "the holiest site" in the region, was the choice at the time.

Being the oldest church in the country, the Basilica has undergone fire destructions and restorations over time, but it evidently still has a lot of devotees of the Santo Nino. (By the way, did you know that the Santo Nino is a relic given as a friendship token by Spanish conqueror, Magellan, to a local woman named Queen Juana?)

Like the other churches, the Basilica also attracts vendors, who can take up the space for walking and car parking. However, the fact that the Basilica maintains solemn masses and houses another tourist attraction on its grounds, the Magellan's cross, proves that the place is a must-go site whenever you are in Cebu.
