The Cross of Magellan
My trip to Cebu would not have been official if I haven't visited, even just once, the Cross of Magellan. Located within the vicinity of the Basilica Minore del the Santo Nino or the Church of the Child Jesus, the compact landmark is an ubiquitous reminder of the history of Filipino Christians who were first baptized on the very same spot. Though I find the place a bit small, especially for the number of tourists who come to see it everyday, I feel like its space is just fitting considering that it is a cross site that would not really require constant flocks of people to visit and honor its religious and cultural significance. But what is probably more interesting than the space it occupies on the church's grounds or the street where the landmark is located (Magellan street) is the art on the ceilings of Magellan's Cross. The paintings summarize what happened during the Spanish conqueror's time and are pretty remarkable. So when you visit the site, just lift your head to the top of the cross and you can already see the whole story. [more] |
