For the food...best of the lot in Liszt Square
Menza is locatated in the really nice Liszt Ferenc Ter, where outdoor cafes abound. Menza is probably the first one you come across, and while it's outdoor environs aren't as good as the others, inside is a stylized reproduction of a Hungarian menza, a cafeteria-style place of the 1960s and 70s. The clientele is young upper-income white collar professionals and tourists and they all enjoy the updated takes on Hungarian classics. Many nights you need a reservation to be seated during prime eating hours. I've eaten there several times since I've lived here and while the place isn't wildly expensive, the food is quality. My problem has always been with the service as they are typical of Budapest waitstaff, very aloof and inattentive, and not always professional. Sometimes you get the right server and everything is great, but if something goes wrong, don't expect a great amount of help from your server. Worth the wait
We were told that "everyone eats at Menza at least once," so we made the effort to go, and ended up going back three more times. The food is really that good, and it's so incredibly cheap. We couldn't figure out how they could make such nice meals centered around hefty cuts of meat for such little cost. Being so popular, it is a very busy restaurant, but don't let that discourage you - either book your table in advance, or if you're not that organised, just show up and there should only be a short wait (15 minutes maximum).
