Cafe Tirolerhof
Here's the thing: Cafe Tirolerhof (near Albertinaplatz) is rumoured to make the best apfelstrudel in Vienna, if not Austria. And it is quite good. Unlike many cafes, they heat theirs up (and not just in a microwave) and drown it in some light vanilla cream that complements the dessert perfectly (although they do go overboard on the cream...more on that later). They also make some good meals if you're looking to spend 4 Euro on a wurst that you can get on the street for 1 Euro. Cafe Tirolerhof is also one of those cafes that continues the tradition of setting a basket of bread in front of you and charging per piece you consume. They also charge for the cream on the strudel, which means if you're going to pay extra (which isn't mentioned on the menu), you may as well get your money's worth. It's a beautiful cafe with good food, however I have a feeling Tirolerhof has seen better days. It has succumbed to tourism, waiters with a permanent chip on their shoulder when non-locals are involved (and at this cafe, it all seems to be non-locals now). There are some far better cafes out there with similar atmospheres; they won't hold your hand through a meal but that's not what you need. All you need is the feeling that you aren't being quietly screwed over by your place of choice for a coffee and sugar buzz. [more] |
