The art of food
Santa Teresa is famous for its high concentration of art galleries, artists' studios and its annual 'open doors' art festival, so it's hard to think of a better location for Restaurante Santa Arte, which sits at the heart of the neighbourhood's shopping and dining strip, close to the bustling Largo do Guimaraes square, and adjoining the Santa Arte art and vintage clothing store. The exposed brick walls are hung with works by eccentric Chilean artist and local resident Selaron, and local musicians set the musical tone each evening with quietly-strummed guitars and moving vocals. But while the ambience is appealing, the food here is the real draw. Younf head chef Vladimir Reis, himself an aspiring artist, takes enormous pride in the presentation of his dishes, and creates pan-Brazilian cuisine that tastes as good as it looks. Portions are generous, prices are competitive, and there's plenty on offer for meat eaters and veggies alike. One word of advice though, try not to snigger too much at the English version of the menu - an overreliance on internet translation sites has led to some comical mistranslations such as 'boyfriend cooked in lemon'!! To explain - their is a fish whose Brazilian name is namorado, which is the Portuguese word for boyfriend. Also, manga (mango) is mango in English, but also means 'sleeve' in Portuguese, so don't be alarmed by the prospect of 'sleeve pieces' in your salad!! [more] |
