Jakarta airport

 stars
I spent a couple of nights in Jakarta airport in June 2007. It was not a great airport to stay in, there are few chairs or benches to sleep in so the first night I had to find a bit of floor to set up camp. On the second night I found a small warung with a seating area which was open all night and the guys working there had no problem with me sleeping on their benches so long as I bought some drinks every now and then. There were a couple of American guys sleeping there also which made it a bit easier to get some sleep. The biggest problem was that the airport is patrolled at night time by local taxi driver / money exchangers who don't want you to sleep in the airport, they would rather take you to a homestay in the city and it takes a lot to convince them you dont want their help. There is a hotel at the airport but it can be fully booked at busy times and is quite expensive for what it is - its about 40 pounds a night. It has internet and computer that you can go in and use, but these are also expensive. All in all I would say Jakarta airport is not for the faint hearted, I slept with my posessions tied to me so nothing could be taken. Nobody attempted to stop me sleeping there, but i did get a lot of hassle and not much sleep! [more]

Choose the right Cab from the airport

Quite rightly passengers arriving at Jakarta airport should be wary about the taxis available. There have been too many stories of people being ripped off, having items stolen and worse. Its not a great situation there, and with less than perfect transport availabe, the taxi is the most obvious choice. New visitors will notice a longer queue for taxis in one area and that is those waiting for a Bluebird taxi. This is because they are the most reliable in Jakarta and have a good reputation. Locals use them, so its clear they are the most reliable. They have a varitey of cars and services, including a pick up service which can be booked on line at www.bluebirdgroup.com. The cabs have a logo on the side of the cars, which is unsurprisingly a bird. The drivers also have ID and a uniform. There have been attempts to copy them so care should be taken, even if it looks like a Bluebird taxi. Jakarta is not an easy place to get around so it could be worth arranging a regular taxi from this company for the whole visit. [more]
