Paradise for gourmets
The 1928 neo-baroque building is a draw in itself, but the real reason to come to the Mercado Municipal - Sao Paulo's biggest and best grocery market, is the sheer quality and variety of food on offer. Those who prefer to have somebody else do their cooking for them can eat at any one of countless restaurants and snack bars - serving everything from full meals to salgados (savoury, salty snacks). For me, though, the best thing about this place is the opportunity to buy all manner of treats from across the country. I picked up some very good Minas cheese here, and there are also great vegetable and fruit stalls, salted fish, meats, wines and spirits, herbs, spices and an awful lot more. Sweet-toothed shoppers will no doubt be tempted by enormous amount of stalls selling goodies such as cakes, sweet pastries, and the sticky, gooey substance known as doce de leite (similar to caramel).
