St Michaels Caves
St Michaels Cave is located in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. This cave is different to many other subterranean caves I visited, and not as big as the caves you can find in Nerja or the Balearic Islands. The St Michaels Cave main chamber is wide and far with some smaller chambers not open for the public . The cave was believed to be bottomless and there were stories told for centuries that the Rock of Gibraltar was linked to the African Continent by subterranean tunnels about 24km long. Because of it´s amazing acoustics they celebrate summer concerts in the caves. As we visited in August it was really nice to enjoy it´s coolness. They told us that in winter the humidity is higher so it gets a bit sticky. It was a quite short visit but nice for staying away from the summer heat! [more] |
