Secret River
Recently I’ve gotten in the habit of getting up and walking at 5 am in the mornings, it’s usually for an hour, so I am home by 6am to prepare for work. One Saturday morning while walking in the very upscale Norbrook area, I made an unexpected discovery which I felt compelled to share. Amidst this Jamaican suburb was a rocky path which gave me the feeling I was in a very rural part of Jamaica. I was surprised to hear the sound of water and after a 15 minutes hike through the bushy path I was standing before a small river. My first instinct was to discard my sneakers and soak my tired feet. Though I can’t take credit for the discovery I felt as if I had stumbled upon one of Kingston’s best kept secret. The river seemed to be unknown even to the people in the Norbrook area because when I shared my discovery with others, there was a general sense of disbelief. So like any self respecting writer, I returned the following morning armed with a camera for proof and a change of clothes, to take a bath of course. It’s about a 40 minute walk from my flat in Arcadia to what I heard is the Nine River, the name is still up for debate because my source was not 100% positive. My friends and I were close by at 5:40 am, but we had to wait a few minutes for the day to light out a bit. It was difficult to cross the small stream because we were unable to see a path to walk. At the break of day I was able to find a part of the river that I could bathe in. There was a waterfall, which I sat underneath to receive the best back massage ever. It was beautiful, the air was clean and fresh and so was the water. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning; I sat in the water listening to wild birds while watching the day light out. It’s hard not to love the diversity of Jamaica, one minute I’m in the midst of a busy city and after a few minutes walk I was sitting in a river. The location is somewhere off Norbrook Road but I would have to visit a few more times before I could give proper directions, as it’s not the easiest or most obvious find.
