Local food at its best

 stars
Nothing beats sitting in the warm tropical heat, savouring the spicy flavours of typical Singaporean food, right on the street in the heart of the bustling city center.

Midnight supper at Lau Pat Sat is every local's favourite activity on a weekend night, especially for the party-goers. When sun sets, Boon Tat Street is closed to traffic and hawkers slowly fill up the empty street with pushcarts and tons of good food. Families pile onto the wooden tables and chairs, tucking in to the famous Malay Satay (meat skewers dipped in spicy peanut sauce), Chinese Rojak (mixture of dough and nuts) and many other local seafood. Stingray barbequed and topped with blanchan chilli sauce, along with boiled shellfish known locally as 'gong gong' and grilled squid with lime and spices sprinkled on to add that exquisite local flavour.

The party-goers hit the food market after midnight, where all the owls come and engage in the favourite past-time of Asians - pigging out during supper. Most Singaporeans enjoy good old traditional Roti Prata (Indian dough eaten with curry), together with teh tarik (milk tea 'pulled' by the indian hawkers to provide that extra taste).

Lau Pat Sat is well-known amongs the locals as the heaven for Singaporean culinary, thou recently it has been revamped and given that touristy touch. Restaurants in Singapore might not be the best places to try out local flavours, while street hawkers are always the culinary experts for local food. Lau Pat Sat is also architecturally colourful, transformed from an old colonial building into this big-scaled eating market. As Singapore is developing faster than the speed of light, modernization is taking over the precious traditions, so get there before it closes down! [more ]

best makan place with large groups and a feel of the Singapore city!

 stars
Lau Pa sat is a bustling, busy eatery at night when all the stalls open by 5pm and people start coming in after that. They love to order everything local: The Famous Chilli crab and heaty durians. You just cannot avoid them when you're in big groups and finding a place to eat. This is the menu not to miss. Price could be a little bit more expensive but nonetheless definitely worth the trip and price! [more ]
