The Oldest University in Asia
Who told you that a local university can’t be a tourist attraction? Well, if it is downright boring and offers nothing, yes, that university isn’t a good place to tour. But if you are in the University of Santo Tomas (UST,) the oldest university in Asia, you just got a lot of places to explore. First off is the library, which has six floors—each offering a selection of books about a specific subject. The next site to visit in UST is the main building which is the oldest structure in the university. It houses a museum and a gallery of world-renowned heroes such as the national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the late president Elpidio Quirino, and many others. All these personalities studied in the university. Though you are inside a university, you can do some shopping. Books, usually made by famous local writers who are university professors, are available in the UST Publishing House, while various novelty items are found in a small mall next to the parking lot. Several restaurants also exist inside and outside of the university. For a more spiritual tour, you can either pray in the UST church or simply meditate in the botanical garden beside the high school vicinity. Lastly, once you get tired of going around, benches are found everywhere. But, I suggest you go to the soccer field and chill on the shaded benches there while you watch handsome soccer players kick butts. Ah… I remember my college days. [more] |
