Lighthouse of Santa Pola
Santa Pola is a town in the province of Alicante. I like Santa Pola for the sea air and nice areas to walk and explore. It is about 10 kilometres from Alicante (El Altet) airport and about 15 kilometres from Alicante city.
An interesting part of the history of this town in my opinion, is its Lighthouse.
It is at the eastern end of Santa Pola by one of the old Watchtowers, in an area called Atalayola and on the top of a 144 metre high cliff. It is said to have been built in 1858 to guide ships that sailed near this coast during the night and to look after Navy ships that used the Bay of Santa Pola at that time.
On entering or leaving Santa Pola on the main N332 road, near to a restaurant called Vista Alegre, you will signposts to the Lighthouse (Cabo de Faro) - Cape of the lighthouse. I have been to the end of this 4 kilometre road to have a look at the lighthouse, but the area was fenced off and you cannot see the building close up. I also wanted to have a hike around this area, but I have to say that it was not an inviting area. To be polite, it looked like the area could be used at nighttimes by ‘lovers’ and it was not an area that my wife and I felt happy walking around.
Saying that, the town of Santa Pola is very nice indeed and I do recommend a visit there. [more ]
