Aspe – Moors & Christians Parade.
Aspe is a town in the province of Alicante. It is approximately 25 kilometres from Alicante and is signposted clearly from the A31 (Alicante to Madrid) motorway. The town itself is surrounded by vineyards where one of the main produces is table grapes. In the month of August, this town holds Fiestas. I have been on a couple of different occasions to the parade of the Moors & Christians. The parade is basically, different groups of people, depicting either a band of Moors who used to inhabit Spain, many centuries ago, or the groups off Christians. These different groups dress in authentic costume of the era, and parade through the streets of the town. The parade can last up to 3 hours. It is very colourful. Along with marching people, there are also tractors pulling decorated trailers containing people dressed in their costume, these people normally throw out sweets to the children in the crowds. It is totally, a family affair and everyone lines the streets to watch the parade. The council put out chairs for people to hire, or like me, I have taken my 2 deckchairs and a picnic basket, and sit at the roadside in comfort to watch the parade and eat snacks. I have seen many Spanish people doing exactly the same. When in any Spanish town, find the local town hall and ask for tourist information of such events and go and watch a parade. Aspe Fiestas normally take place during the first week of August every year. [more] |

Novelda - Moors & Christians Parade
Novelda is a town in the province of Alicante. In the car, it is about 30 minutes drive from Alicante city and Airport. It is easily accessed from the A31 motorway out of Alicante. Spain's history goes back in time to when the land was ruled by either Moors or Christians. In virtually all towns in Spain, they have parades called Moors & Christians parades, where different groups of people (Cofradias), dress up in authentic costumes and have parades through their towns. The parades can last up to 4 hours. Usually the parades can take place between 1 to 5 days duration and culminate in a mock battle. I have been to one such parade in Novelda; this was approximately 4 hours duration. The costumes are spectacular and the whole family come out to watch. It is a very serious event in Spain, and all the family join in. The Novelda event takes place around the 21st to 23rd July of every year. If in the Alicante region on your holiday, make a note of this date and have a look. You will not be disappointed, I wasn’t. [more] |
