Feast of the Black Nazarene
If you want to witness super heavy traffic in Manila, then you must go to Quiapo on January 9th. Why did I say witness instead of avoid? The answer is simply the Feast of the Black Nazarene. This feast is celebrated by all Filipinos, both rich and poor, by having a procession with the life-size statue of the Black Nazarene. When I say all Filipinos, think about stampede or a huge pool of people. The original statue is already 403 years old and has been damaged by time, so it’s being kept inside the church. The one used in the parade is just a replica, but Filipinos don’t care. For us, being part of the Black Nazarene procession is more important. During the procession, people try their very best to touch the statue no matter what it takes. Some people simply throw their handkerchiefs or towels to the carriage that carries the statue, and they believe that those hankies or towels are already blessed once they have been wiped on the statue. This feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the most-awaited by Filipinos. So if you happen to be in the country during this month of the year, don’t miss your chance to witness a famous local feast which clearly illustrates the Filipino faith. [more] |
