Great day trip from St Petersburg

 stars
St Catherine’s Palace is a spectacular building on the outskirts of St Petersburg which is open to the public as a museum and stately home. It used to be the summer residence of the Tzars, hence it’s grand, baroque appearance. I enjoyed the exhibits and marveling at the opulent rooms which have been kept in excellent conditions and carefully restored after a lot of the palace was damaged in World War 2. The Amber Room is probably the most impressive room, full of restored amber panels which are stunning to look at, unfortunately this is a restoration as well as the original was dismantled by the Nazis and sold. The gardens are beautiful as well, with manicured lawns and interesting topiary and you can happily wander around them and the surrounding land for a few hours. St Catherine’s Palace is easy to get to from St Petersburg with regular buses running throughout the day. [more]
