New alternative music venue
For an intimate experience for Manchester music types, MohoLive is one of the best up-and-coming venues to visit. Despite being tucked down some stairs in a back street in the Northern Quarter, looks are decieving. This nightclub has a capacity of more than 1,000, spread over two rooms that become packed sweatboxes. MohoLive opened in 2008 to showcase new acts, mainly bands, but it also hosts comedy and burlesque. Club nights are popular among students from the three universities in the town, who do not seem to mind the £3.30 a pint drinks prices nor admission, which can be £5 up. Come here for a clientele of Oasis-haircuts, girls in long shirts and short skirts and Amy Winehouse wannabes. MohoLive has hosted rock opera and an international DJ competition, and is fast becoming the place to be over the well-worn boards of other indie/alternative clubs in the city. Dig deep and try to get past the strictest security presence in Manchester. Getting in may be tough, but this place is well worth a visit. [more] |
