Big Brother Buddha watches over this asian-styled bar
The Ciba Mato bar in Stuttgart, which sounds a bit like the Italian "cibo matto" - meaning "crazy food" - is an aisan-themed bar in Wilhelmsplatz, Stuttgart. It is central in Stuttgart, although a small walk away from the main shopping street where a larger variety of restaurants and bars can be found.
Our hotel was located just a couple of streets from Ciba Mato, so we thought we would check it out on our way back from eating in the city centre. It opens until late every evening, right through until 4am on a saturday night. We were there on a wednesday night and already it was quite full when we arrived at about 10pm. As you enter, there are chairs, tables and benches littered with cushions to the right and a kind of smoking room to the left. This is quite a small room, with lots of soft-looking sofas all around the room. It was absolutely full in here where lots of couples were trying out the shisha pipes and getting as cosy as they would in the bedroom. This really made the bar look sleazy, especially because of the red lighting! This added a sort of tackiness to an otherwise very stylish bar.
Most of the interior was painted red and had lots of Buddha statues dotted around the room and some drapes hanging down. We managed to find a small spot to sit but we were right by the door and so I felt a little cramped in. It would have been lovely to have sat outside had it not been raining so heavily! I could see several white benches packed away under the covers and so I suppose that in the summer this helps to open out the space in the bar and rings in a lot more custom.
The waiter was friendly and made our cocktails really well. He was a little slow though, just because it seemed that there were only two waiters on duty who couldn't keep up with the amount of orders coming in. I have a feeling that quite a few people go here because it looks good, but not because the service or the food is any good. Granted, the cocktails were fabulous, with plenty of decoration and fresh fruit dipped into them. Nevertheless, this artistic way of creating the drinks rally reflected in the price. A night out at just this one bar could very easily cost in excess of 100 euros, and for me it just wasn't worth it.
I recommend Ciba Mato for those visiting the city who want to take it easy, relax in a chilled-out atmosphere where the music is funky and the drinks are strong. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other bars in the city that can keep you equally entertained and sufficiently fed (with the delicious tastes of the local Swabish food) at a much better price!
