Ratskeller Würzburg: A restaurant with status
It was christmastime and the family and I wanted to take a rest from the christmas shopping and come in from the cold snowy streets of Würzburg. We decided therefore to treat ourselves to a meal at the Ratskeller, opposite the main Wöhrl shopping centre and at the end of the Alte Mainbrücke. We walked in the main entrance and I was really impressed to find that we were actually on the first floor of the restaurant looking down into one of the main rooms. There is a big heavy curtain hanging over the doorway, a simple invention used to keep the draft out in the winter months. I have only encountered these curtains in restaurants in Germany, and each time it has been a lovely meal, so they are kind of a good omen for me! We had to go to the back of the restaurant because the main area was packed full of people. I usually don't like it when places are overly busy, but the ratskeller is so large that it really wasn't a problem. I actually thought that we weren't going to be able to be seated but the waitress offered us a reserved table so long as we were able to leave before these guests arrived. We had just over an hour, which was long enough for me - I was famished! I liked the homely feel of the restaurant. Lots of wooden panels and cosy little seats and benches were scattered around wooden tables varying in size. The waitress was quick to come over with our menues and took a drinks order whilst we chose our food. There were a variety of meals on the menu consisting mainly of typical Franconian meat dishes accompanied with sauerkraut, klöse, sauces and vegetables. There were also fish meals, grilled meats and pastas. I'm actually not sure if I saw anything vegetarian on the menu, except for salads of course, but these do not constitute a full meal. However, traditional Franconian food is not known for being vegetarian! I opted for a pork steak with side-salad, and really enjoyed it. The meat was cooked well, was served warm and the salad was crisp (but I would have liked it to have been a little larger). I left the Ratskeller feeling satisfied and with a full stomach! I was treated to the meal by the family, but I had a sneaky look at the prices - which are very reasonable for the popularity and the location of such a restaurant. Also be sure to leave a small tip. This is not obligatory, but if the waitressing is good (as was mine) then hey, why not. [more] |
