Its remote origins go to the Neolithic, gaining further importance in the Roman Empire period. Under the Portuguese Kingdom the outer castle walls started to be built in the early XII century. Today the castle hosts the Portuguese Military Museum, run by the Portuguese Army. It has exhibitions related to the Portuguese European campaigns in World War I as well as domestic wars in Mozambique against local tribes.
