Outeiro - hiking to the castle's ruins
Outeiro is a very old village – with human occupation dating at least to the Roman Empire time. In the XIII century the Portuguese King Dom Dinis rebuilt the castle on top of whichever fortress was there before. Since then Outeiro's Gothic Castle has been in many battles related with the independence and history of Portugal. The village itself used to be inside walls – but finally the Spanish managed to destroy the castle in the late XVIII century, during the War of the Seven Years.
A nice hike up into its 800 meters high ruins, takes you across old chestnuts and a beautiful landscape. With a 4x4 it is possible to go by car. An archaeological intervention is yet to be done in...
