Museum of Banality - Don't the People Deserve a Better Palace?
As with other Glasgow museums, The People's Palace fails to live up to the magnificence of its building (which is actually in turn outshone by the nearby former carpet factory). Designed to be a museum of the people for the people, Its premise is very worthwhile, which is what makes its dreariness even more depressing. Most of the exhibits are poised uncomfortably between celebrating Glasgow's working class roots and whitewashing all its troubles. The layout is fairly uninspired, and the ramshackle items give the distinct impression that the curators were struggling to find anything interesting to represent the city. It left me with the sad feeling that Glasgow really has no history to be proud of, which I think is a missed opportunity and a real shame. [more] |
