Margaret Place Historic District: Tracing the Roots of Lake Charles’ Real Estate

 stars
The Margaret Place Historic District is associated with the funniest land ownership stories. I could not believe my ears when I heard that one of the owners in the chain of previous owners of the expansive piece of land had acquired it in exchange for 1 bottle of rum and two blankets from Indian owners! The landmark constructions in the Margaret Place Historic District began in early years of the 19th century which have since turned out to be the source of fame for the amazing historic district. A tour of the historic district takes visitors through numerous landmark buildings, leading among them being the ancient but ever magnificent historic buildings such as the Margaret Manor Apartment, the Brulet Building, James Clooney House, Griffith House, William Managan House, Stevens House Seven and the Cullen Liskow House. Going Down the Memory Lane at Historic Charpentier District

Located in downtown area of Lake Charles, I found the Historic Charpentier District to be a lively section of the city that still retains its 19th century and early 20th century architecture. The City Council of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society Records have successfully effected the preservation of the historic district for many years. The Historic Charpentier District consists of several square block area covered with the finest Victorian architecture in the State of Louisiana. A walk through the historic district takes one through dozens of ancient buildings designed and constructed between the late 19th century and early 20th century. Most of these buildings were put up by local carpenters because the town did not have professional architects at the time. This particular historic district of lake Charles is always lively and abuzz with commercial and tourist activities. Thousands of tourist flock the area to have a feel of the 19th century building designs and architecture. Visitors also enjoy walking or driving tours of the city while interacting with the local population as they go about their daily business activities. There are also dozens of unique shopping and dining experiences to be enjoyed at the Historic Charpentier District. Many restaurants in the area serve American, French and international cuisines while gift shops offer wide varieties of crafts and souvenirs. [more]
