Not so scary...

People tend to make a big deal out of the danger of the red light district, but one of the three times I went to Amsterdam I stayed in a hostel there, and it was the best accommodation by far.

If you're into the nightlife or you want to hit up a few coffee shops, the red light district is your best bet. Most of the students who come to Amsterdam stay in or hang around this area, so it's also a great place to meet new friends. If you're not sure which coffeeshops to try, just take a look and see which ones are the most full: with so much choice, you can tell which ones have loyal patrons and which ones are only so-so. Asking the people who work in one of your favorites is another good way to get some insider tips.

I loved the red light district and found it very interesting. Just be sure you respect the rules (no pictures of the girls in the windows). The only danger of staying in the red light district is the chance that you won't see the rest of the city! The time that I stayed at a hostel in the red light district, that happened, which was a terrible shame, because there's so much more to do! [more]

Green light for red light

The red light district in Amsterdam is definitely worth a visit. It isn't as big as I thought it would be but it is a great place for an evening stroll, and quite an eye-opener. Don't take your camera with you because you could get yourself in trouble. I was amazed that there was no railings by the canals, but in general the place had a fun, safe vibe about it - considering it's reputation. [more]

Green light for Amsterdam's Red Light District

I had no idea what to expect from the Red Light District in Amsterdam. I had heard so many different reviews about the place that I just wanted to make up my own mind. A few people had said how seedy they had found the place whilst others thought that it was a great place for some fun and entertainment. Again some said how it was full of drunk louts on hen/stag parties which spoiled the atmosphere, whilst others said that they found the area culturally liberating and expressive. Perhaps it was all these things, or none at all, but I decided to find out once and for all!

It wasn't too hard to find the Red Light District, Tbecause it is located just a 10 minutes walk from Centraal Station, the main train station. All around there were theatres, shops, museums, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and of course hundreds of windows in which "sexy girls" were sitting (this part, of course, is fully subjective) - I myself wouldn't have minded seeing a little more from the male of our species! It was clearly a tolerant communal place where freedom (and of course sexual freedom) is valued highly.

I actually needed a bit of courage to actually go into one of the sex-shops. Being English, I am not so fully liberated with all things sex-related as my fellow Continental- Europeans are! It was brilliant though, and my naivety vanished fairly quickly! On a serious note though, you really shouldn't head to this area if you are easily offended. It is of course geared up for tourism, but all in all it is about business, and the ladies in the windows are providing a service as business-women and aren't just there to be ogled or stared at. You certainly should not attempt to film them or take photographs. The area is well-policed, but you still need to be aware of your belongings and keep your wallet or purse safe on you.

Although the Red Light District provides lots of adult entertainment, int he day-light you can really appreciate the 300-year-old gabled buildings here. A lot of the most expensive houses of the city are situated here, where many doctors, lawyers, and well-to-do families live. I also felt safe here, but I have to say I wouldn't want to go alone, particularly at night - there was always a little part of me that wanted to keep to the main streets "just incase". So I would recommend going with a group of friends and having a bit of fun in the loacal bars before taking a walk around to see some new and very, ahem, "interesting" sights! [more]

Don't put on the red light

In Amsterdam you don’t even have to be looking for the red light district. If you’re just wandering about the city, chances are you’ll come upon it anyway. That’s what happened to me. I was sauntering about the streets by whim with some friends when we suddenly turned into a street with red lamps on the doors.
As we walked along, I was a little taken aback by the scantily clad women pressed up against big windows from the inside. I knew prostitution is legal I Amsterdam, so I wasn’t as scandalized by the starkness as I was disturbed by the look of the women on that street – they looked distraught and haggard as if bogged down by their profession. I haven’t made up my mind about whether that’s good or bad. [more]

Ah well we have all heard the stories about this place and I do have to admit as seedy as it may be it is hard to resist the lure. Even a friend of mine who I thought would not be caught dead in the place had a stroll around. There you go. Swarming with people eyeing the women in the windows many people do not really see how beautiful this neighborhood really is. It is transforming little by little, becoming more trendier and dare I say upscale, but yes it is changing for sure. If you really want to experience it all do pop by during the night hours. However do keep an eye out on your belongings, it would be wise to go with someone else rather then on your own and for heavens sake do not buy drugs there. Oh and you shouldn’t take pictures of the ladies in the windows - strictly verboten. There are plenty of shows, theaters and other stuff if you are feeling more adventurous but as I have said do have some common sense. [more]

PIC

A really interesting place to go to in the Red Light District is the PIC, or the Prostitution Information Center. I was really curios about it when I saw the small office, but I thought my girlfriend would feel somehow offended if I suggested to go in. Surprisingly, she was on with it and said that it would surely be interesting to see what was in there. The office is very nicely decorated and the lady there was very friendly. They just have some brochures that tell you about the laws of prostitution and how one should act when offering and buying such a service. We just took some brochures and left. I must admit,we both felt kind of strange and regretted having walked in there, but try it...maybe it gets more interesting for you. [more]

I couldn't have visited Amsterdam without visiting the Red Light District. I visited by day and it was with my girlfriend, but I still got to stare at the women in the windows. It was more out of curiosity than anything else. There are so many women there and i am positive in saying that they're for all the tastes. Women of all ages, races, beauty-level, etc are exposing themselves there. Some had their curtains closed, which means they were working. I think that the most beautiful ones had their cabins at the upper floors. I don't know whether that's a marketing strategy, but I guess it could be. The area is not dangerous, or at least not by daytime. It's full of tourists, all amazed and staring at the women. It's interesting. [more]

Possibly Amsterdam’s most famous attraction, it’s difficult to avoid it if you visit the city. It’s more run down and seedier than the rest of old Amsterdam and of course it has its ladies in the windows, sex-shops and sex-cinemas in abundance. But you will find some perfectly normal pubs (not linked to the sex trade) amongst all the neon and sleaze so don’t be afraid to stop for a drink. If offered drugs on the street just say ‘no thanks’ and walk on. Go to a coffee shop elsewhere if you’re that way inclined. Please don’t have any worries about visiting the RLD, particulary at night, as that's when it's really buzzing and full of tourists. Just act sensibly and look after your valuables and you’ll come to no harm. [more]

Red light District

When going to Amsterdam check out the red light district. This was to my experience, one of the most interesting things in Europe. It was not the fact that girls in there undergarments line the street, but to the fact that they were just standing there in little lit up rooms. All along this area are girls in red rooms, that just stare at you, making you think either something is wrong with you or they want you in some dirty sexual way. There are also plenty of nude sex shows, shops, and musuems.

One things to watch out for in Amsterdam is pickpocketing, drug sellers, and going to far from the central street in the Red Light District. Pickpockters are all over Amsterdam so take good care of your things. Drugs sellers are also found throughout this area, trying to sell Ecstacy and LSD among many others. While Marijuana is more or less legal, these other drugs are not. People have had bad experiences trying these drugs because they are not regulated and could be mixed with a variety of other harmful drugs. Avoid going outside the center of the Red Light District because this district is set up in sectionts. The center has the most beautiful girls, but as you go farther away and drift down the alley ways, the girls get uglier, scarier and sometimes they aren´t even completely women anymore.

You will find many young tourists mocking the girls in the district causing a seen, as well as a very mad prostitute. However, it is worth to watch.

One thing you should never forget while in the Red Light District, never take a picture! This absolutely forbidden and you will get in a lot of trouble for this. Be warned! [more]
