Don't Be Grave At The Hanakao'o Park
Hanakao'o Park is a nearly 5 acre beachfront park near Lahaina on Maui. It is rather unusual in that it features a lonely looking cemetery filled with the remains of Asian and Filipino immigrants who made their way to Hawaii to work on the sugar and pineapple plantations. The cemetery is rather a stark place with red dirt surrounding the monuments facing the sea. The park is just across from the cemetery and is quite lovely with grassy areas, picnic pavilions, grills, restrooms and outrigger canoe clubhouses. On any given day there are colorful canoes pulled up on shore. This is a nice beach area with some good snorkeling available and it's a good place to take small children to play and swim. Be sure and bring sun block and shades. There is a lifeguard on duty during daylight hours. There is both paved parking and a gravel parking area. [more] |
