Arvoredo Marine reserve - Scuba diving in Bombinhas
There are quite a few dive operators in Bombinhas. They all take you to the Arvoredo Marine Reserve. I would recommend Submarine, which is one of the longest standing dive schools in town.
The Arvoredo Marine Reserve is made up of 3 islands. If you are not a diver, the dive school will take you to Arvoredo island, where conditions are beginner friendly. It’s a 45 minute boat ride to the island. In your introductory dive you will be with a dive instructor or dive master all the time and he or she will take you by the hand on a shallow dive (less than 10 meters deep).
If you are an experience diver you can ask to be taken to Gales island, which is farther away. Dive schools go here probably once or twice a week for deeper, more challenging dives. There is no spectacular sea life in the area, but you can see some sergeant fish, and other small fish, an occasional turtle or stingray if you get really lucky.

Bombinhas and Quatro Ilhas
Bombinhas is a good option if you are visiting Florianopolis but would like a quieter, smaller place and especially if you are into diving. There is one main street that runs parallel to the beach. You can walk along the whole downtown area in less than an hour. There are hotels, shops and restaurants along this road and most dive shops are located here as well.
The sea is emerald green and the conditions vary everyday: it can be very calm or pretty rough. But the waves are never really high.
If you are into surfing, you can visit the neighboring beach: Quatro Ilhas (four islands) which is very popular with local surfers. The bars here have a nicer atmosphere and visitors seem to be more laid back. There are more private houses than hotels and shops in this area.
