Hector Vasyli Memorial and Old Victoria Bridge
Opposite the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and near the Victorian Bridge is the old pier. Five Bridges have spanned the Brisbane River at this point. The pier is all that remains of the 4th bridge, which spanned the river from 1869 to 1969. There is a memorial arch here that commemorates a young boy killed while welcoming returning soldiers from World War I on the 9th of June 1918, age 11 years. The newspaper seller was welcoming troops home when he was struck by a truck carrying World War I soldiers.
