Great for adventure tourists
Caixas do Sul is pretty much off the Gringo trail, lying between the Serra Guacha and Porto Alegre, but anyone spending time in Rio Grande do Sul would be wise to spend some time here. It's a great base for excursions into the local national parks, and horseriding, trekking, climbing etc can be organised from here. I was, sadly, just passing through but found myself wishing I had more time to spend - the town itself is pretty uninspiring, but there's a good tourist infrastructure and endless opportunity for off-the-beated track adventures.
