Monet’s House and Garden at Giverny

The impressionist painter Claude Monet moved with his family to the town of Giverny in the 1880s. He spent the rest of his life at Giverny, and it was here that he created his famous studies of water lilies that are shown in the Orangerie in Paris. To visit the house and garden is to literally experience the life of the painter. The house contains many original furnishings, and we can see how Monet and his family lived. But it is the garden that is truly memorable. Monet created essentially two gardens: a flower garden with a profusion of flowers and plants; and the water garden, with its nymphéas (water lilies) and its Japanese bridge.
