Its standard practice across Asia to leave your shoes at the door - even some offices in Bangkok ask you to do this as a matter of courtesy. But Bangkok is very sophisticated compared with the rural parts where I am now and the liklihood of meeting a snake, a scorpian or some other unpleasant creature is very real. It may be the 21st century but as far as the less desirable things of the night are concerned this matters little, and a pair of shoes is as good a place as any to settle for the evening.
