Albi Cathedral 4 stars

The cathedral at Albi remains one of my favourites since it has an incredibly austere, fortress-like exterior which hides one of the most sumptuous and beautiful interiors I’ve ever seen. Not a square inch of the place seems to have been left untouched by the Renaissance painters and carvers and an enormous wall fresco of the Last Judgement is particularly impressive, although the central section has been cut away to create an archway.

The Toulouse-Lautrec museum is opposite the cathedral (but closed Tuesdays out of season) and there is a pleasant park over-looking the river a short distance from the cathedral.
