Hverarönd
Hverarönd is an easy stop for those visiting the Krafla area, and it's fascinating to watch the field of solfataras as they gurgle and spit, heated by magma below. It's also quite a thrill to hear the scream of steam as it escapes the craters. The otherworldly landscape is striking on the eye, and you can easily imagine yourself an extra in the film Total Recall - but a quick glance was all I needed. The icy wind was bad enough - but the stench was unbelievable! Sulphur is an all-pervasive smell in Iceland, but standing beside great clouds of it was hardly my idea of pleasure.
