Insider advice for your Christmas Island vacation

I've never been to Christmas Island. It seems a terribly long way to fly. From the east coast of the USA where I live it would be necessary to go to Perth, Australia and then catch one of the twice weekly flights to the island on National Jet Systems aircraft in order to fly the 2,600 km distance. The island is supposed to be one of the great tropical seabird breeding spots. Not only that, but the marine life is reputed to be spectacular. Has anyone in the community been there yet? What is the best time of year to vist? I've checked out some info on www.environment.gov.au/parks but I would prefer hearing from someone who has made the trip.
