Insider advice for your Eastbourne vacation

Typically thought of as a destination for the older generation, Eastbourne can make for a nice day out if you want to visit the seaside. I think it is one of the cleanest and most attractive of the south coast resorts.

There is a long promenade along the front which you can walk/jog/rollerblade along. The beach is long but pebbly not sandy. There is a pier in the centre with a few shops, tea rooms, an amusement arcade, a pub and a nightclub and you can of course find many places to buy ice-cream and fish n chips along the promenade. There is an open top bus and a tourist train which takes you along the front.

The prom also has several nice cafes along it towards the western side of the resort. Towards the east there is “Frontierland”, asmall fun fun fair, and “Adventureland” a pirate themed adventure land, which has rides, a playground, an area with pool and beach (entry £2) and mini golf (£4.50 for an adult). These are designed for children. There is also a bandstand near the pier where there can be special events.
Towards the west is Beachy Head and a country park, which it is possible to walk to. The open top bus also takes you to Beachy Head.

Eastbourne also has the congress theatre, a museum of shops, and a military museum. There is a pedestrianised shopping area with the main high street stores. It is not very big, but it is clean and easy to walk around.

Wish Tower restaurant and café offers waitress service and self service options and has great views of beachy head and out to sea. It also offers great value for money so definitely somewhere to try for a light lunch. You’ll be spoilt for choice for fish n chips shops (look out for meal deals and set menu options which can be good value for money) and there is a Harry Ramsdens if you prefer a chain. There are also lots of cafes within the shopping area.

There is parking along the promenade but this is pay and display so I would advise that you park on one of the backstreets on the western side of the town, such as Silverdale Street.

There are numerous places to stay along the seafront – from the Grand Hotel, to smaller hotels and B&Bs, holiday flats and also a new travelodge and Big sleep hotel. It should be easy to get a room for £30.

I’ve visited Eastbourne quite a few times and liked it each trip. Because it gets the most sun of any British town, it has a reputation for attracting lots of pensioners, which is a rumour I can definitely say is true. So whilst I’ve had to struggle past zimmer frames in the town centre, the views from the panoramic seafront are gorgeous. The town centre itself is not all that great but there are a few hidden gems; namely the bars Bibendum, The Dew Drop, and The Green House. I think because people visit Eastbourne for its pier and seafront walks, they tend to forget about the South Downs, a range of rolling green hills set just behind Eastbourne. There’s lots of walks across the Downs with great views.

I will never forget the lovely experience I had when I went to Eastbourne. I went there by coach since the cost is better, it is relaxing and I didn’t have to worry about changing trains, getting up ridiculously early to get the first train of the day or having the risk missing any trains.

As soon as I got there, I was keen to explore the town and also to have some chilling out time on the beach. This place was definitely not a disappointment for me since there were so many places to go and so many things to see and do.

I only went there for a day trip, but I wouldn’t mind staying there for a few days. There are plenty of hotels there, so it wouldn’t be a problem for me.
