Croatia - Travel Guide

Introduction  |  Travel infos

Croatia has secured itself a place among the top vacation countries within Europe.  With its 6000 kilometers of coastline, its 1,185 islands (of which only 66 a consistently resided upon), its green hills, baroque chateaus, and art treasures dating back to Roman times it has become an attractive and popular travel destination today.

Its diversity is a primary factor for Croatia.  Form the beach vacation in sceneries of picturesque coastal villages to a hiking vacation through the National Parks along with sight seeing and active sport vacations – anything is possible.

Dalmatia, Istria, and the Bay of Kvarn are the three largest vacation resorts of the country.  A vacation in Dalmatia leaves a multitude of choices to the visitor:  leisure time on the beach, hiking in the mountains, boat tours, water skiing, surfing, horseback riding, paragliding, free climbing - there is nothing that is not available.

Worth a visit is the city of Dubrovnik with its unique political and cultural past.  With right, it is called the Pearl of the Adriatic, since in medieval times it once belonged to the most important economic and cultural centers of the Mediterranean region.  Today, the historic city presents itself as a unique open-air-museum, with an abundance of archaeological, historical, and cultural sights begging to be explored (i.e. the Diocletian Palace).  Dubrovnik is an UNESCO world heritage site.

Another highlight of Dalmatia is the National Park Paklenica amidst the Velebit mountain range.  The fantastic scenery has served as a stage for many Western movies.  Another National Park is Krka.  There, visitors can marvel at the impressive water falls of Sibenik.

The Croatian Adriatic coast with its peninsula Istria is a dream in steel blue and with hundreds of reefs and islands a paradise for sun bathers and water sport enthusiasts.  The coastline is marked by stony “beaches” forming coves that offer an invitation for snorkeling and diving, to admire the colorful underwater world of the Adriatic Sea.

Well known are Porec, a very old city with multi-cultural backgrounds, Rovinj, a city with an unmistakable Italian influence, and Umag, the most northern beach resort on the West coast of Istria with a historic downtown, medieval alleys, and sunny plazas.

The third region, the Bay of Kvarn, reaches from Opatija past Rijeka, Crikvenica, Vovi Vinodolski, to Senj and a bit further South.  Tourism is a tradition here and the residents are known for the happy nature.

In the North, travelers can visit the mountain region of Gorski Kotar with peaks of over 1,500 meters; in the South, the Velebit mountain range presents peaks of over 1,700 meters.  The deep blue ocean with the mountains in the background presents an imposing stage setting which influences the entire region.  The Bay of Kvarn is very popular for its sailing conditions and offers many sandy beaches and remote, hidden coves.

The islands of the Bay of Kvarn, most dominantly the largest Croatian island, Krk, are connected to the main land mostly by bridges.  The island of Rab presents the most beautiful harbor towns in the region.

Inland, National Parks such as Risnjak and the Lakes of Plitwitz await visitors.

The capital Zagreb celebrated its 900 year anniversary in 1994.  Visitors will find numerous cultural and historic remnants, museums, and galleries along with modernly furnished stores, a high quality and rich selection hotels and restaurants, as well as sport and recreation facilities.
