Insider advice for your Essaouira vacation

Essaouira 3 stars
Essaouira is an important harbor in the west of Morocco, not very far from Marrakesh. The town is pretty small, but I liked it a lot. I only spent two days there and I spent most of my time in the actual harbor. It's lovely to see all the fishermen coming from fishing and starting to fix and clean the nets. There are many women selling bread and food, but I avoided to buy any, because they were spreading everything on the ground, which was kind of dirty. I really loved the old city walls and the small castle and the museum was also pretty interesting. It's not as dangerous as Marrakesh, but also not as interesting and beautiful.

Useful tips 2 stars
Compared to the busy city of Marrakesh, Essaouira is a very quiet place. But, even here, you do get approached by locals trying to offer their services and then charge you. Obviously, thee are not so many as in Marrakesh and maybe even not that aggressive. I haven't seen the typical men who try to take pictures of you and an exotic animal, but what they usually do here, is try to offer you cheap rooms. They tell you tat your hotel is completely booked and that they could offer you a better place. My advice is to ignore them and never believe that your hotel is full. They would say anything to convince you. Some of them take your bags and carry them to the taxi or the hotel, in spite of your protests and afterwards, they obviously charge you. I find it pretty frustrating, so that's why I always advise going to North Africa with a group and a guide.

Essaouira Museum 4 stars
Essaouira has a lovely city museum, hosted in a small building. It was built during the 19th century and it is a former town hall. The museum has many items on display, mainly focusing on the history of the region. I loved the strange musical instruments and I remember having seen some of them in the Stadt Museum in Munich. There are also some accessories for women and lovely traditional clothes. The whole building is beautifully decorated, as the ceiling has lovely painting and the walls have beautiful hand-woven carpets. If you're visiting Essaouira, I really suggest visiting the museum.
