I first visited Joaquina in the nineties when it was a beautiful natural beach, good for surfing. It was one of my favourites places on earth. It was somehow disappointing to see it became an unrecognizable noisy crowded beach.
As you approach the beach the high dunes next to the...

Most visitors to Ilha da Santa Catarina don't stay in Florianopolis city centre. but if you're in the island for a few days then it's worth taking a taxi here in the evenings to check out some of the bars and nightclubs, which are less touristy than those in the beach resorts. The area around the...

If you're looking for a white sand beach, cafes on the sands, and plentiful places to stay and eat, Barra da Lagoa is perfect. The area is popular with backpackers - in fact there's a huge hostel across the bridge at the bottom of the beach - and the atmosphere is laid back and relaxed. There's a...

Ilha da Santa Catarina is a long, thin island scalloped by scores of beaches, and getting around the place involves making plentiful use of public transport. Initially, working out how to use the bus system can be a bit confusing. Once you arrive at the rodoviaria, you can walk over the bridge...

Praia Mole is one of the nicest beaches on Ilha da Santa Catarina, and Park Hotel has to be one of the nicest places to stay without breaking the bank. It's set in lovely woodland, with a lake on one side and a beach on the other, so the scope for photo-taking is pretty much unlimited. Park Hotel...

As I was visiting the south of Brazil as part of some updating work for a travel guidebook, I thought I should check out The Backpacker's - a huge hostel in Barra da Lagoa. You can't miss the big whitewashed building, it sits high on a hill right by the sea. The English-speaking staff here were...

While I was staying in Ingleses, I thought I'd check out some of the other hotels on this busy beach. Lexus Internacional was one decent option, being right on the beach front. The apartment I looked at had a little barbeque and also a sea view, and I can imagine it would be lovely to cook your...

Ooh, this place is nice. Just over 30km from Florianopolis city itself is Santinho Beach, and the Costao do Santinho Resort.
The resort is right on the beach, and the best rooms have lovely ocean views. You're also surrounded by Atlantic rainforest and there are trails leading into the...

When I visited this lovely little beach resort on Ilha da Santa Catarina, it was full of Argentine families who all seemed to be enjoying themselves thoroughly. At the 'village' there are around 200 guest houses, each with space for four-eight people. I found the staff to be extremely friendly,...

So the day had finally arrived - I wanted to check out the Barra da Lagao area of Ilha da Santa Catarina, and, with no chance of a tourist board freebie, I was going to have to rough it. Having...

The state capital of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis is known affectionately by locals as Floripa. It sits on Ilha da Santa Catarina, which is attached to the mainland by a bridge, and many people use the name of the city to refer to the whole island.
The city itself is clean,...
