Lovely Floripa
The state capital of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis is known affectionately by locals as Floripa. It sits on Ilha da Santa Catarina, which is attached to the mainland by a bridge, and many people use the name of the city to refer to the whole island. The city itself is clean, relaxed, friendly and attractive, with some nice colonial buildings and plenty of leafy, shaded spaces in which to shelter from the summer sun. The city is also notably cheaper than tourist super hotspots such as Rio de Janeiro, and while most people make their base at one of the many beaches rather than in the city itself, it's well worth a day's exploring.
