Girona history 4 stars
City of Girona is located on a hill that overlooks the rivers of Ter and Onyar. The city itself was founded by Iberians but you can also note the influences of both Moors and Romans.

Since it was an important strategic point different nations did fight over it. When the Moors occupied Girona it was under Arab rule for 3 centuries and there was a notable Jewish presence for well over 600 years.

Because it was under attack so often some have dubbed Girona the city of thousand sieges and it managed to withhold its defenses against Napoleon’s troops no less then 3 times.
In my opinion such long and checkered history and so many different inhabitants give Girona its distinctive charm which is also plainly obvious in its architecture.

Girona nightlife 5 stars
We were not really much in the mood for discos or nightclubs, probably because it was so hot that the mere thought of being indoors was enough to make me come all over faint.

But since Girona does come alive in the evenings, there is a great number of bars and cafes and basically you go from one to another. Think English pub crawl but its open bars and you are in Spain. Really they do have it down as art.

The majority of places are located around La Rambla, Placa Ferran el Catolic and Placa de Independencia.
Head in direction of one of these places and you will not be disappointed. One of the deadliest vodka juices I had was in Girona so it so no wonder I cannot even remember what was the exact name of the places.

Girona – pack light clothes and plenty of sunscreen 4 stars
I was in Girona at the beginning of August and I have to tell you its dreadfully hot. Scorching hot in fact. And since I am very pale and it did not occur to me to pack a sunscreen I got a bit of burn on the first day.

Pack light airy clothes, put sunscreen on if you are going out in the middle of the day but I would advise you to go the Spanish away and enjoy siesta because really majority of shops will be closed anyway and you will see little or no people in the street anyway.

Girona comes alive in the morning and late in the evenings, but after trying it the hard way and wandering about for the first 2 days in the middle of the day I realized it was much better to just give in and stay away from the heat.
And needless to say if you are going in summer have water with you at all times you will need it.

Girona – how to get there 4 stars
If you are arriving by plane most usually you will have 2 options. You can either arrive to the Girona airport or Barcelona airport.
Girona airport sees a number of flights from low budget companies such as Ryanair and it is about half an hour away from the Girona’s city center.

Some even arrive here and then head for Barcelona, which in my opinion is a shame since Girona is so pretty.

We arrived to Barcelona airport and from there the easiest option is to catch a train to Barcelona Sans (the main train station).
There are trains from Barcelona to Girona all day long and the journey will take about an hour to hour and a half, depending on the speed of the train. The train station in Girona is just a few minutes away from the very city center.

Girona - general information 5 stars
When somebody mentions Costa Brava the first thing you probably think about is Lloret de Mar or one of the seaside towns that are notorious for being tourist traps. I did go to Lloret de Mar and well since it was a class excursion, needless to say that much of it was very hazy.

However there are a few gems that can be found inland at Costa Brava and are well worth checking out in my opinion. And one of these gems is Girona.
A friend was performing in Girona, so I tagged along and I do have to say even though I love Barcelona and even though Girona is much smaller it does not make it any less interesting or any less beautiful.

Girona city wall 4 stars
Girona town wall is probably the greatest town wall I have ever seen (and walked). It is situated high above the town and it is almost intact, so one can walk for an hour or so on the top discovering the amazing views. Every few meters of it offer a different view to the city center, the cathedral, the river and the other attractions. There are some very beautiful gardens close to the wall Be careful if you are visiting the wall in the summer, it can get pretty hot and there is no place to hide from the sun.

Girona 4 stars
Girona (Gerona) is a wonderful city in North-Eastern Spain, situated on the banks of the river Onyar. The town has very big and charming old core with nice cobblestone streets, hills , wonderful churches and a town wall. La Rambla is the main street full of souvenir shops and nice cafes. There are many bridges across the river – surprisingly they are probably the only places where one can see the river – there are houses built on almost all of the banks. This is a wonderful city and according to me – the best place for a day trip from Barcelona.

Girona/Gerona 4 stars
If you fly to Barcelona with Ryanair it's quite likely that you'll fly into Girona airport and while you're there, you should definitely take a trip round the town. Girona is on the Costa Brava, but don't be put off by thinking that it's like other 'lager lout' restorts like Benidorm or Salut, it's definitely not.

Girona is a really interesting twon because it's so diverse- there is a beautiful coastline but there's also rolling green hills, gothic ruins and steep, tall mountains. There are loads of different things to see as well- the Jewish area and the Cathedral are particular highlights.
