Australia - Tasmania - Hobart Botanical Gardens 3 stars

Looking for a nice cheap way to spend an afternoon in Hobart, then head to the botanical gardens.

You don't have to pay to get in and they are a nice peaceful haven away from the city.

The nicest way to get there is to ditch the car/bus and walk there across the soldiers walk, starting outside the Aquatic Centre. It's only about a 20 minute walk across a very minor hill and the tree-lined soldiers park is very pretty.

There is a nice Cafe in the Botanical Gardens with lots of seating on a covered balcony over looking the grounds. It's the cheapest place to have luch but it's certainly a lovely spot for coffee.

Australia - Tasmania - Hobart Salamanca Market 3 stars

If you can time it right, try and be in Hobart on a Saturday. This is when the Salamanca markets come to life. From 8.30pm - 3pm every week on Salamanca Place by the harbour.

There's lots of local produce for sale - most of it edible, and there's books, clothes and collectibles to rummage through. You won't go hungry either, if the lcoally grown produce doesn't tickle your fancy there's various stalls offering international cuisine. Throw in a couple of street performers and it's a great way to spend and afternoon the city.

I found most things in the market to be quite expensive but it's a pleasant place to have a wander.

Australia - Tasmania - Hobart swimming 3 stars

Not so much a tourist attraction, more an activity you can do in Hobart if you fancy a break from sight seeing. The Aqua centre in town offers gym and swim packages. It's a public swimming pool so be prepared for school kids and mums with babies, but there is lane swimming and the gym was practically empty. There is also a small sauna and steam room to relax in after a workout. Prices were $5.40 to swim $9 swim & spa or $13.40 to use everything all day, including the gym.

The only expensive thing here is the lockers at $2 non refundable for two hours.

Australia - Tasmania - Hobart - Internet 5 stars

The price of internet seemd to vary immensly in Hobart. At City Central Backpackers it was a massive $12 an hour compared to most of the internet cafes which charge $7.

The best place however is 55 Elizabeth Mall. It's above a cafe in the main shopping street and they only charge $4 an hour. It's quick as well and there are plently of machines.

I could never work out if the shop actually had a name (i'm pretty sure it didn't) but it's up a small flight of stairs and is next to a hairdressers.

Australia - Tasmania - Airport Shuttle 4 stars

The cheapest way to get out of Hobart airport is to get the SHUTTLE BUS.

They run a regular service and will usually be outside ready to meet arriving flights. They are heavily branded minibuses so you can't miss them. It's $12.50 for a single trip into the city (dropping outside your hotel) but as you will no doubt be flying back out at some stage I'd recommend asking for a return ticket. At $21 it offers a little bit of a saving (as long as you don't lose the ticket!).

When the driver drops you off just ask for a timetable of pick up points for the way back.

Australia - Tasmania - Mt Wellington 4 stars

The ONLY way to see Hobart is to walk to the top of Mount Wellington. You can drive right to the top (10k) but it is a really nice walk and a great way to get a bit of free exercise in the city. It should take you about 3 hrs to get up if you start right at the bottom. Alternatively you can drive to 'The Springs' carpark about half way up and do the rest of foot from there. This seemed to be what most people were doing.

The Zig Zag track takes about an hour and a half and the last bit is pretty steep. Definitely wear closed shoes with a good grip, especially if it's been raining, the whole track is quite uneven and there are loose stones in places.

There's a modern viewing centre at the top but that's about it, so if you do decide to walk up, remember to bring snacks!!

Even if you don't do the walk, drive up. It's definitely worth a visit.

Australia - Hobart - Pirates Bay 4 stars
If like me you decide to travel up the east coast of Tasmania, make sure you head right down to the bottom to start your journey. All around Port Arthur is lovely.

I would particularly recommend you make a stop at Pirates Bay. It's on the A9 and really well sign posted. There's plenty of parking and it's a great spot to jump out and have a swim.

There is also a very short walk down to a Tessellated pavement - worth a look.

Tasmania - Hobart - Hollydene 2 stars
If you have an older guidebook (as I have) then you should know that Hollydene Lodge has moved. It is no longer at 55 Campbell Street, it is now 67 Liverpool Street.

This place is centred around a pub and in all honesty it wasn't my favourite hangout in Hobart. The rooms are the same as hostels worldwide but there was a distinct lack of common areas and the whole place just seemed a bit tired and grubby.

If you are planning to spend a couple of days in Hobart then I would recommend you stay at the CITY CENTRAL BACKPACKERS on collins street or the fun, chilled PICKLED FROG on Liverpool street. Both of these are nice and central, clean and fun.

Tasmania - Hobart - Backpackers 4 stars
I stayed in three different backpackers in Hobart and my favourite was CITY CENTRAL BACKPACKERS on 138 Collins Street. It is ideally located in the centre of town, has all the ammenities you need from a hostel and the staff were great.

The common area are quite spread out, which I like, as it provides a few quiet areas to read and get away from the busy kitchen or TV area.

The rooms are bog standard bunk affairs so no suprises there.

The only down side of this place is that reception closes quite early and they close the front door. The back door is a code system so if you are planning to arrive late at night, make sure you phone ahead to let the staff know.

I also stayed in Hollydene and Pickled Frog but I preffered City Central.
