Chinese New Year in Indonesia

Chinese New Year (a.k.a. “Imlek”) is a national holiday in Indonesia, but it was once banned by the government. With a history of repression and the Chinese being a minority the country, New Year celebrations tend to be quiet private family affairs. That being said, there is a growing interest in public celebrations, at least in the big cities like Jakarta. This past year for example I noticed more Jakarta shops had New Year sales and one could see red and gold decorations around the city.
