On the paradise island of Ilha Grande, Colibri Resort, also known as Pousada Beija-flor (Portuguese for Hummingbird) is a gorgeous little place and a real bargain compared to prices in Rio itself....

Most people arrive in Angra with the intention of catching the afternoon ferry over to Ilha Grande, but unless you're very organised and your timing is immaculate, you're liable to miss it. Arriving at Angra bus station and negotiating a taxi into the town centre always takes longer than one...

Eating out in Ilha Grande can be an expensive business, particularly if you're here during high season. You'll need to do a bit of hunting around to find the best spots, but there are good deals to be had. The trick is to avoid the obvious spots such as the beach front and the main town square,...

If you're looking for somewhere to spend a hedonistic few days partying hard and painting the town red, you're in the wrong place. Ilha Grande is many things - beautiful, unspoilt, romantic...but a party destination it is not. There's not a huge amount going on at night - when I visited I asked...

We had to be up relatively early to catch the ferry back to Angra, and after a late night in Ilha Grande's only club, I very nearly lived up to my reputation for missing the boat. Luckily a fellow camper had the heart to wake us up, and we managed to be up, dressed and packed in record time....

We only had one full day to spend in Ilha Grande, but luckily the gods were smiling on us - the thunderous rainclouds of the previous night cleared away and we woke up to perfect clear blue skies. Having put away a few drinks the night before, we didnt feel up to the two-hour trek up to...

Keen walkers will be in heaven on Ilha Grande, but you'll need to give yourself a few days if you want to make the most of the place. Jungle trails will take you across the enormous island to beautiful hidden beaches, lagoons, and even to the ruins of the former prison that once made this...

Our mission to survive on as little money as possible continued as we headed for the bright lights of Villa de Abraao, with our own supply of vodka tucked away in our bag. It has to be said that very few people go to Ilha Grande for the nightlife - it's more a place to kick back and relax - and...

There's no shortage of places to stay on Ilha Grande, no matter what your budget. As you climb off the boat you're immediately surrounded by people trying to direct you to there accomodation - whether it's a hostel, pousada or campsite. Somebody mentioned a hostel for R$15 per person, which is a...

This was my second trip to Ilha Grande (the first was back in 2006), and the second time I'd managed to miss the ferry over to the island. So that's a 100% track record for missing the boat - not very impressive!
The first time, I'd found myself aboard a tiny fishing schooner with...

Having missed the R$6 passenger ferry over to Ilha Grande, we were stuck having to pay R$20 for a seat on a fishing boat with other tardy travellers. Luckily, it wasn't due to set off for 30 mins, which gave us a chance to run to the cashpoint (there are none on Ilha Grande), and stock up on...

It's difficult to know what to do when you get off the bus in Angra dos Reis at the rodoviaria. Groups of gringoes disembark and stand around looking confused - wondering where they find the boat that will take them to Ilha Grande. Luckily, there are English speaking staff at the tourist...

The trip from Rio de Janeiro to Angra dos Reis takes you down the Costa Verde, or Green Coast, and it's a gorgeous bus ride.
Appropriately enough, the bus company that makes the journey is called Costa Verde (they also run buses to Parati, further down the coast). You'll past lush green...
